This year’s Buckeye Council for History Education (BCHE) Conference and Teacher Resource Fair were held on July 23-24 at the Ohio Historical Center in Columbus, Ohio. Over fifty educators and their guests attended the fair on July 23 to learn more about Ohio Historical Society resources and programs as well as resources from a diverse range of institutions including INFOhio, the Future Cities program, the History Teaching Institute at The Ohio State University, the Ohio Center for Law Related Education, the Supreme Court Visitor Education Center, and many more!
On Thursday evening Nick Taylor, author of American-Made: The Enduring Legacy of the WPA: When FDR Put the Nation to Work delivered the conference keynote address on “The WPA in Ohio Some High (And Not so High) Lights.”
On Friday, July 24, fifty-seven educators attended the BCHE Annual Conference, Programs, Progress, and People: Innovation in History. Sessions revolved around the topic of the programs and policies of the New Deal, particularly the WPA; and the 2010 History Day theme, Innovation in History. The conference featured concurrent sessions addressing history content, pedagogy and resources. Sessions were led by academic and public historians, top educators from the state of Ohio and professional archivists and curators, including Donna DeBlasio of Youngstown State University, Stephen Ortiz of Bowling Green State University, Cleveland-based historian John Vacha, Kenneth Bindas of Kent State University, Lawrence Richards of Miami University, Tim Montgomery of Allen East High School, Mat Dunham of the Newark City Schools, Susan Dietz of Logan High School, and Aimee Crosby of the Columbus City Schools.
The lunch keynote speaker was Dr. Timothy Messer-Kruse. His talk “From Banksters to Masters of the Universe: Popular Explanations of Economic Collapse in the 1930s and Today,” enthralled the audience. The closing ceremonies featured a presentation by folk singer Hank Arbaugh on the songs of the 1930s and 1940s: Songs of Poverty and Hope.
